Jamaica Vacation Safety

Your Jamaica vacation safety is a topic you may have considered.

The truth is, although an island paradise, Jamaica also has its fair share of crime and other dangers. With a little bit of sensibility though, you can have a wonderful... and relaxing holiday.

Most crimes against tourists (and these are very rare) are petty and usually carried out if the opportunity seems just too good to resist. Taking the necessary precautions will ensure that you have a pleasant, crime free stay.

  • Avoid walking alone at night

  • Stay in familiar areas, even during the day

  • Use your room safe to lock up your valuables

  • Do not walk around with wads of cash

  • Keep your doors and windows locked when you leave your room, as well as at night

  • Do not invite strangers, or people you have just met, to your room

  • Make use of reputable tour companies, guides and drivers

Jamaica is still a homophobic nation. This does not mean that homosexuals are not welcome. Be prepared though for adverse reactions... should you display your sexuality openly.

Some women might be shocked by the behavior and attitude of many Jamaican men. If you are a single female, be prepared for many attempts to give you a "likkle Jamaican lovin'". As a foreigner, you represent money and status.

Unless you are really interested and willing to go all the way, you should not flirt, not even as a joke. Do not beat around the bush. If you make the Jamaican man feel like a fool, you might just end up with a whole lot of trouble.

Rather be safe than sorry and have a trip filled with memories you would want to cherish forever.

One last note: Don't hesitate to speak with Police officers in Jamaica. They are professional, courteous and friendly. You will get whatever assistance you need and they're usually a great source of information.

Here's hoping you have a safe, fun-filled Jamaica Dream Vacation!
